English Championship is the third league with the biggest attendance in Europe

England's second tier placed itself behind Premier League and Bundesliga but above Liga, Serie A, and Ligue 1

English Championship is the third league with the biggest attendance in Europe England's second tier placed itself behind Premier League and Bundesliga but above Liga, Serie A, and Ligue 1

Last February, nss sports brought you inside the St. James’ Park, home of Newcastle United, to show you some of the magic that only English football is able to give. One of the things that surprised us the most, being a Championship game - England’s second tier - was the number of spectators at the stadium: 52,131. But if you think that this number is due only to Magpies’ fame, you’re quite wrong.

The report about the attendances at stadiums during the 2016/17 season released by UEFA, in fact, confirmed that the English Championship is the third most crowded league in Europe, above Liga, Serie A, and Ligue 1. Leading the Top 10 there’s, of course, the big sister, the Premier League, that looks everyone else from above with its 13,6 million spectators, while the second place is held by Bundesliga. The German league, that praises one of the best filling percentages at stadiums, is second with 12,7 million spectators. And as we said, the third tier of the podium is held by Championship, that in the last season had 11 million total spectators.

The second English tier achieved this impressive result with an average 20,125 audience, a little lower than Serie A but with more games played. In the aggregate classification, though, our league is in the fifth place (8,3 million spectators), behind the Spanish Liga, that hosted 2,3 million more. So, it’s really true that English football is the best in Europe and it looks like it’s also Championship’s merit.
