The e-sports could become an Olympic discipline Seems like the Committee is trying to bring video games to the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris

As you may have read, the International Olympic Committee has recently assigned the next two edition of the Summer Olympics (2024 and 2028) to Paris and Los Angeles. And, for sure you know this as well, the e-sports revenues have increased exponentially in the last years, realizing record incomes and aiming at earning more than a billion dollar in a few years.

This two news may seem completely disconnected from each other, but they aren’t. The co-president of the Parisian Committee, Tony Estanguet, has, in fact, announced that it’s their intention to make the e-sports a proper Olympic discipline for the French edition of 2024, after that the “joystick sports” gained their participation at the 2022 Asian Games. “If the Olympics want to maintain their charm even on new generations, they have to consider video games as proper sports”, said Esatanguet.

Of course, the Olympic Committee will have the last word on the matter, but even the mere fact that the e-sports are about to be discussed as Olympic discipline says a lot about their growth. After all, the e-sports earnings have passed from 194 million dollars in 2014 to 463 in 2016. Like saying, “Business is business”, even for the Olympics.
