Rome in August

Rome in August A photographic portrait by Antonio Cavalieri

Cities in August look different, for a whole month they show a side that is hidden during the rest of the year. nss magazine explores the transformation of three Italian cities: Rome, Milan, and Naples. The third and last episode is dedicated to Rome.

There are many myths about Rome in August. For its inhabitants it has become a cliché - “It’s not that bad after all, there is no traffic." - a belief encouraged by Nanni Moretti’s movies and by those who have never lived in Rome in August. The real heroes ruling the capital in its hottest month are tourists. Between Trevi Fountain, the Colosseum and San Pietro, you can always see bunches of tourists stepping on the hot sidewalks armed with selfie sticks and hats to protect themselves from the sun. As Martin Parr did for Magnum in 2005, Antonio Cavalieri's lens captured the aesthetics of kitsch tourism in Rome for nss magazine, including fake Supreme souvenirs and sunsets beside the Colosseum. The theme of decadence, the myth of the Dolce Vita,  subway workmen sweating while building the C-line and tired horses of the Botticelle of Piazza Venezia.

Antonio Cavalieri, a witness of Roman VIP chill spots, famous for his photos of emerging and non-emerging artists, portrays today's Italian music scene showing both satirical and serious sides.
