Top 10 things to stream on the weekend The films and tv series to binge-watch instead of going crazy for Coronavirus

What to watch when the world is on fire?

In these days there's panic in Milan. While it's true that the general state of hysteria is slowly dying (somebody told us that shelves on the supermarkets have been finally fulfilled) and bars can stay open at night (but only after 18 pm), it doesn't mean that the streets are a safe place again. That's the perfect excuse to wear pajamas and stay warm on the sofa all the weekend long. If you're young and lazy, here's a list of advices for films and tv series to stream on Netflix and Prime Video.

TV SERIES

I Am Not Okay With This (NETFLIX)

It's the new-comer in the Netflix house, a special featuring between the producers of Stranger Things and the director of The End of the F***ing World. The plot is actually basic: Sophia is “boring, 17 years old white girl” that hates school and her parents, but her life turn upside down when she finds out that she has mysterious superpowers. What's new? She is a lesbian portrayed by the girl that played Beverly in the new It saga. We suspend our judgment until the end of the weekend.

Hunters (AMAZON PRIME VIDEO)

It's the new-comer in Amazon Prime Video's home. Instead of a restless teen, the leading character is Logan Lerman (Percy JacksonThe Perks of Being a Wallflower). Set in the New York of 1977, this is the story of a nazi-hunter that goes after a group of nazi-officials that conspire to create a Fourth Reich in the sacred United States of America. The series is produced by Jordan Peele and Al Pacino is also starring. The premises are cool, but we suspend our judgment until the end of the weekend, here too.

Top Boy (NETFLIX)

It's the top favourite series of Drake, who in 2017 decided to join the magic television venture to produce the third season of it. Top Boy is a british show (aired from 2011 to 2013 on Channel 4) that explores the everyday life of two drug dealers in the streets of London. A few days ago, Netflix has announced the production of a fourth season (that would actually be the second of this new chapter), but Netflix gives us the opportunity to watch even the original ones (under the title of Top Boy: Summerhouse). Only for a thug weekend.

Night on Earth (NETFLIX)

There's nothing to do, Netflix has all the answers. Even for all the people that go grazy over the smile of a lioness caressing her puppies, or for who - as me - could keep watching hours and hours of videos about whales. Following the success of Planet Earth, there's a new docu-series in town. The series is narrated by the voice of actress Samira Wiley (Orange is the New BlackThe Handmaid’s Tale) and it unveils the veil of night to look at the secret life of animals. When the light fades, new worlds awake.

SKAM Italia (NETFLIX)

It's the Italian version of the homonymous Norwegian series that has gone viral all over Europe. SKAM Italia is already a cult. The plot is basic, here too: it follows the everyday life of a group of high-school teenagers in Rome. But don't be tricked: it's the most real, well-written and well-played series that Italy has had so far. Produced by TIMVision and now on Netflix, it's not casual that the generalist television has never even considered it. You can stream the first three seasons on Netflix, while the fourth one is coming in spring. Don't put yourself off: each episode is 20 minutes long and once you've started, you just can't stop. We bet that you'll be over it for all the weekend. Want to bet on it?

CINEMA

A Quiet Place, John Krasinski (NETFLIX)

Feeling some end-of-the-world vibes? On Netflix there's A Quiet Place, directed by John Krasinski, the beautiful director who's also Emily Blunt's husband. The film leading-character is Emily Blunt, the beautiful actress who's also John Krasinski's wife. Among them some kids, long-legs monsters and the smell of an upcoming apocalypse. Oh, and a few days ago it's been released the trailer for the second chapter of this new horror saga. It's already a HIT.

My Neighbour Totoro, Hayao Miyazaki (or every film by Studio Ghibli on NETFLIX)

If you feel like it's time to watch (or re-watch) some masterpiece of modern cinema, on Netflix there are some of the marvelous animation films by Studio Ghibli, the Japanese animation film-studio founded by Hayao Miyazaki. For now, there are 6 of them (as Kiki's Delivery Service and Porco Rosso), but if you just have to pick one it must be My Neighbour Totoro (1988). Look, cry and enjoy the experience.

Okja, Bong Joon-ho (NETFLIX)

Following the success of Parasite, the film that hit the 2020 Oscars® and has earned so many money that we people wouldn't believe. Furthermore, it has turned Bong Joon-ho into a star. Fortunately, Netflix is streaming two films from the director's archive. One of them is Okja, a little fanta-animal gem that premiered in Competition back in 2017 at Cannes Film Festival. The film is from South Corea, but it stars international actors as Tilda Swinton, Jake Gyllenhaal and Steven YeunHurry up, we’re not dreaming.

One Child Nation, Nanfu Wang (AMAZON PRIME VIDEO)

In these days it's easy to make jokes and stereotypes about China, so what a moment to explore and go deeper into its culture! Amazon Prime Video offers the great chance to watch this documentary about China's only-child policies that have been silenced for years by the Chinese Government. Remember her name: female director Nanfu Wang is one of a kind.

Pokémon: Mewtwo colpisce ancora – L’evoluzione (NETFLIX)

February, 27th was a very important day: not because of Coronavirus, nor because it was National Polar Bear Da. It was a special day because on February, 27th of 1996 Nintendo released the first video-game that introduced us to the Poké-world. To celebrate Pokémon Day, Netflix has released a 3D-remake of the very first film of the Pokémon Saga (Pokémon The First Movie – Mewtwo Strickes Back, 1998) that looks like Nintendo feat. Dora the Explorer - and it's so bad that is already a cult. You can't miss it.

Above that, for everyone who loves tragedy we suggest that Prime Video has already assembled a "playlist" with the emblematic title of "The end is near" and it offers films as 40 Days and NightsAirplane vs VolcanoSharknadoSharknado 2Sharknado 3Sharknado – The 4th AwakensSharknado 5: Global Swarming e Sharknado 6.
