The best TV series to be released in January 2018

There is no rest for the TV series.

We always come up with new ones or come back those that we have loved most with other seasons and, if they are canceled, we can always console ourselves with the replies.

It is fortunate to live in the 21st century.

So even January is full of shows, unpublished or drawn from famous books. It matters little, what matters is that they give us breath from our daily routine.

Some titles? There is the chapter of American Crime Story dedicated to the murder of Gianni Versace, the dystopian story taken from the nth series of stories by Philip K. Dick or the gothic thriller set in London in the 1800s.

McMafia

James Norton abandons the priest clothes that made him famous in Grantchester to wear those of Alex Goldman, a man who tries to leave behind the criminal history of his family.

Alex grew up in England, he has a distinguished career and is happily engaged to Rebecca (Juliet Rylance), but the Russian and mafia past of his parents catapult him into the world of crime.

The series taken from Misha Glenny's autobiographical bestseller, will debut in Italy on Amazon Prime Video on January 2, with a second episode on the 3rd and then the next 6 available one every week, close to the airing on the BBC.

 

9-1-1

January 3, Fox Usa

 

Ryan Murphy aka the mastermind behind American Horror Story and American Crime Story is back at the beginning of 2018 with the co-production of a new project for the American channel Fox.

As can be easily seen from the title, 9-1-1 tells the stories of a team of emergency Los Angeles-composed of policemen, paramedics and firefighters. Among them stand out the characters of detective Athena Grant (Angela Basset), Bobby Nash (Peter Krause), firefighter livin’ on the edge, and the 911 telephone operator Abby Clark (Connie Britton).

If you want to trust Murphy’s talent, know that in the first episode the team will have to help a woman asphyxiated by her pet python.

 

 

Hard Sun

Would you ever bet on former model Agyness Deyn as the savior of the world?

Neil Cross, author of the acclaimed British crime series Luther, did so and chose the girl to play the detective Elaine Renko who, together with his partner Charlie Hicks (Jim Sturgess), will try to stop an event that will lead to the destruction of entire planet within five years.

 

Feud – Bette and Joan

January 7, Studio Universal Italy

 

While the hardcore fans are waiting for the second season (for the American TV probably in late 2018), dedicated to Charles and Diana, finally he arrives in Italy Feud.

The series of Ryan Murphy in 8 episodes tells on Studio Universal digital terrestrial pay-tv channel Mediaset Premium the rivalry between Bette Davis and Joan Crawford, played by Susan Sarandon and Jessica Lange, become explosive on the set of What Ever Happened to Baby Jane?.

An opportunity to recover one of the best TV projects of last year.

  

The Orville

The Orville aka the parody of  “Star Trek” loved by many and hated by critics, played by the creator of Family Guy, The Cleveland Show and American Dad.

The 13 episodes of the first season tell the adventures of Ed Mercer, the same MacFarlane, a pilot in command of the spacecraft USS Orville and his wacky and colorful crew that includes his ex-wife, a drunken helmsman and artificial intelligence.

In the series also a cameo by Charlize Theron.

 

Electric Dreams

January 12 Amazon Prime Video

 

Amazon Prime Video brings together a cast of famous actors also (and in some cases especially) thanks to the TV for the anthological series Electric dreams.

Steve Buscemi (Boardwalk Empire), Bryan Cranston (Breaking Bad), Anna Paquin (True Blood) and Richard Madden (Game of Thrones) are among the protagonists of ten episodes lasting an hour, based on stories from legendary sci-fi author Philip K. Dick.

For some, the attempt to replicate the success of another dystopian project such as Black Mirror.

 

Black Lightning

16 January, The CW - 23 January, Netflix Italia

 

Could this year be missing a show starring a superhero?

Of course not.

In fact, the American channel The CW launches the character of Black Lightning, a man endowed with the ability to manipulate electric currents that have abandoned his costume to become a school principal and dedicate himself to the family. When a series of new events will endanger his daughters, Jefferson Pierce will be forced back into action.

Written by Salim Akil, the superhero played by Cress Williams is based on the DC character created by Tony Isabella and Trevor Von Eeden.

 

The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story

The second season of the hit series on the major cases of American crime reconstructs the murder of Gianni Versace, which took place in Miami Beach July 15, 1997, becoming the series perhaps most looking forward to this January.

There are still only a few days to go on the air, but the premises seem to be excellent: the same team of the award-winning “The People v. O. J. Simpson” and a cast very similar to the characters to whom they are inspired.

Penelope Cruz plays Donatella Versace), Edgar Ramirez is Gianni Versace and Ricky Martin is Antonio D’Amico, the designer’s partner.

 

The Counterpart

JK Simmons, Oscar winner for Whiplash in The Counterpart turns into an employee of a UN agency that one day is introduced to a parallel dimension identical to its own, created by mistake during an experiment in the Cold War.

For lovers of intricate spy stories that mix dystopia and politics.

 

The Resident

21 January, Fox USA

 

If the superhero category is occupied by Black Lightning, Fox takes care of that of the medical drama with The Resident.

The story? That of the young doctor Devon Pravesh (Manish Dayal), an idealistic graduate who will discover what it means to be a doctor under the guidance of Dr. Conrad Hawkins aka Matt Czuchry aka Logan of Gilmore Girls.

Also starring Emily VanCamp of Revenge.

 

Britannia

22 January, Sky Atlantic

 

The clash between Celts and Romans arrives on Sky Atlantic.

We are in 43 AD, the Roman Empire is trying to conquer Britain and threatens the rise to power of Queen Kerra, and her enemy Antedia.

Not just a TV series, but a whole mysterious world marked by epic battles and populated by wild women warriors, druids, and powerful gods.

The most optimists think Britannia as the new Game Of Thrones.

 

The Alienist

January 22, TNT

 

New York of the 19th century.

There are Cary Fukunaga, that is the executive producer of the first season of True Detective, Daniel Brühl (actor seen in Goodbye, Lenin! and Inglourious Basterds), the Dracula Untold Luke Evans and there is also Dakota Fanning.

A serial killer kidnaps many children and the local police led by new police commissioner Theodore Roosvelt relies on a psychologist (the title’s alienist) and his assistants to investigate these gruesome murders. Hossein Amini, author of the beautiful Drive, is both screenwriter and executive producer of this miniseries in 8 episodes from the best seller of Caleb Carr.

 

Mosaic

22 January, HBO

 

A smartphone app that is also a TV series, conceived, written and directed by Steven Soderbergh.

The new project of Oscar’s winner for Traffic that talks about the murder of a woman in Utah was, in fact, already released as an app in November, but now its contents are reworked becoming six episodes TV.

Sharon Stone plays the murdered illustrator of children’s books.

 

Young Sheldon

31 January, Infinity

 

The nerds rule the world, but even they were children.

Also Sheldon Cooper of The big bang theory.

In the prequel of the famous series, produced by CBS and from the end of January also broadcast in Italy on Infinity, we see the little genius blossoming under his poster by Albert Einstein.

The debut in the States has gathered in front of the TV 17 million spectators, will there be so many Italians?
