Nike wants to let PSG use the same jersey two years in a row

An unusual choice to make the world of football more sustainable

Nike wants to let PSG use the same jersey two years in a row An unusual choice to make the world of football more sustainable

While the football world is still at a standstill and teams are gradually releasing their new jerseys for the upcoming season which starts at the beginning of August, one of those pieces of news has been leaked from Nike's house that could mark a historic change. The Oregon-born brand also seems intent on following in the footsteps of Brentford who a few months ago agreed with technical sponsor Umbro that the club will not release a new first jersey for the upcoming 2022/23 season but will reuse the one from the current season. Despite the recycled polyester jerseys and various environmental campaigns, Nike wants to do even more to reduce the ecological impact of the football industry. And the first club involved in this initiative, which could undoubtedly set a historical precedent, effectively changing the jersey market, will be PSG. In fact, it is not yet certain whether this decision will be extended to all clubs of the swoosh, according to various sources the proposal has only been delivered to the French team.

An important choice for the environment, but one that would actually be a return to the past, in the 1990s clubs used to take to the field wearing the same shirt for two seasons in a row. Everything could then be reversed, although not all teams are going in the direction of Nike or Brentford. Napoli is a case in point, De Laurentiis's club together with EA7 this year alone has produced more than 10 kits, at the same time filling and confusing the market. After months, then, it is almost safe to say that Brentford's choice will not remain an isolated case, but their gesture will probably set the standard.
