Todd Boehly is the new owner of Chelsea After more than 20 years, the Roman Abramovich era has officially ended

A few months ago Roman Abramovich put Chelsea up for sale with these words: "I would like to address the speculation in the media in recent days in relation to my ownership of Chelsea. As I have already stated, I have always made decisions with the best interests of the Club at heart. In the current situation, therefore, I have taken the decision to sell as I believe this is in the best interests of the Club, the fans, the employees, as well as the sponsors and partners." A few months after that announcement came the official announcement, Chelsea was sold for around €5 billion to a consortium led by Todd Boehly, Clearlake Capital, Mark Walter and Hansjoerg Wyss. But who is Todd Boehly? He is an American businessman, chairman of a fund that invests in various sectors including insurance, asset management, technology, sports, media and real estate. He is no stranger to the world of sport, the new president of the Blues already owns 20% of the Los Angeles Dodgers and is co-owner of the Los Angeles Sparks, and in 2021 he also acquired 27% of the Los Angeles Lakers.

The new chairman has not only pledged to continue the London club's winning streak of bringing home the Premier League, Europa League, Champions League and FA Cup in the last five years, but also to invest more in the stadium, youth and women's sectors. All those fans who had hoped that the club would be bought by the fund in which the names of Lewis Hamilton and Serena Williams stood out will therefore be disappointed, Todd Boehly has had the better of it with an offer capable of convincing Abramovich and his partners. The first is Hansjoerg Wyss, one of the most influential Swiss in the world and owner of a company that produces medical equipment, the second is Mark Walter, an American entrepreneur and CEO of Guggenheim Partners, a global financial services company. An important trio created to give continuity and guarantee a future to the club, which in the hands of Abramovich was by now prevented by law from carrying out any kind of operation.
