Interview with Reptile Youth

Arrivano dalla Danimarca e qualcuno ha già avuto modo di ascoltarli live in Italia lo scorso Novembre in occasione del loro concerto a Firenze; sono I Reptile Youth, duo composto da Mads Damsgaard Kristiansen e Esben Valløe che stanno vivendo un 2013 da indiscussi protagonisti.

Merito innanzitutto di un sound che si alterna tra l’indie e l’electro-punk ed una serie di video che han fatto parlare parecchio della band.

Si può pensare a Speeddance, il singolo probabilmente di maggior successo della band o anche a Black Swan Born White che ha fatto ballare Germania e Giappone o ancora si può cercare in rete su vimeo il loro video "proibito" Morning Sun, oscurato da youtube per quelle immagini troppo forti.

I Reptile Youth hanno già promesso di tornare  in Italia, ma nel frattempo siamo andati noi da loro! 

 

1. Chi sono i Reptile Youth?

Fatichiamo a darti una risposta, in quanto oggi siamo un qualcosa e domani saremo altro…un qualcosa in continua evoluzione!

2. Mi è sorto un dubbio! Siete danesi, ma avete iniziato la vostra carriera in Cina. Perché questa scelta?

E’ vero!  Abbiamo fatto il nostro primo tour in Cina . Durante un viaggio a Shanghai, Mads e io abbiamo deciso di mettere su uno spettacolo su un tetto per alcuni amici e per qualche passante curioso. Un promotore americano, di passaggio a Shanghai, in modo casuale ci ha ascoltati e di li a poco è iniziato tutto, in breve tempo abbiamo iniziato il nostro tour in Cina. E’ stata un’esperienza così surreale!

3. I vostri video hanno fatto parlare molto di voi. Qualcuno è stato anche censurato! Io vi definisco persone innovative. Cosa trasmettono?

Abbiamo un amico con il quale condividiamo ispirazioni visive e insieme a lui abbiamo deciso di coinvolgere, per i nostri video, diversi registi. Abbiamo affidato tutto il lavoro nelle loro mani; ascoltavano il brano e lavoravano al video. Ogni video descrive la canzone con gli occhi di un regista. Il nostro budget era limitato, è stato incredibile vedere quanta passione c’hanno messo.

4. Come siete arrivati alla hfn music?

Kasper Bjørke, il nostro manager, ci ha presentati. Ci siamo incontrati con i responsabili della hfn dopo il nostro concerto ad Amburgo e dopo poco abbiamo firmato un contratto con loro. 

5. Siete già stati in Italia, a Firenze, ho trascorso una bella serata. Quando tornerete a trovarci?

In realtà, quello di Firenze, è stato uno dei più difficili spettacoli del nostro tour! E 'stato il quinto spettacolo di fila e tornavamo da Vienna, ricordo benissimo che ci esibimmo senza dormire. Ricordo Mads che mi guardava nel mezzo del set e con occhi disperati mi diceva che non  ce la faceva più a cantare. Speriamo di tornare presto e questa volta con occhi non offuscati dal sonno.

1. Who are The Raptile Youth?

It. That's it. That started it. It is. Goes on. Moves. Beyond. Becomes. Becomes it and it and it. Goes further than that. Becomes something else. Becomes more. Combines something else with more to keep becoming something else and more. Goes further than that. Becomes something besides something else and more. Something. Something new. Newer still.

2. I have a doubt! You are Danish, but you started your career in China. Why?

It's true and not true. We played our first ever show in Denmark and before that spend a lot of ours in the studio - but it's true we did our first ever tour in China - and this by a total coincidence. On a trip to Shanghai Mads and I decided to put up a show on a rooftop for some friends and whoever would show up. An american promotor based in Shanghai randomly popped by and shortly after we were touring China. It's such a surreal experience thinking back on.  

3. Yours videos have done a lot about you. Someone was also censored! I call you: innovative people. What do you want to transmit with your videoclip?

We have a good friend who we share visual inspirations with and together with him we started asking directors we were visually in love with if they wanted to take part in creating videos for each of our songs. We wanted to let go of all control and have each director create what ever they felt when listening to the music. Each video has become an uncensored version of the song through the eyes of a director. We only had a very little budget and it's just amazing to see how much heart everybody put into this!

4. How have you arrived at hfn music?

 Kasper Bjørke, our manager, introduced us to them. He was signed to HFN and had been really happy with them. After talking to different labels and none where we really felt a chemistry we meet up with HFN after our show in Hamburg and shortly after we signed to them.

5. You were in Italy, in Florence, I spent a lovely evening. When you come back to visit us?

Florence was actually one of the hardest shows on our tour! It was the fifth show in a row and we came directly from Vienna with no sleep. I remember Mads looking at me in the middle of the set and with desperate eyes telling me that he could not sing anymore. He said it felt like he had knife's in his troat every time he sang a word. After the show we had to drive directly to France and play again with only very little sleep in the car. I hope we will be back soon and with eyes that are not clouded by no sleep.
