The new MM6 Maison Margiela x The North Face outwear capsule

Avant-garde reinterpretations of iconic The North Face items

The new MM6 Maison Margiela x The North Face outwear capsule Avant-garde reinterpretations of iconic The North Face items

UPDATE (17/02/2020): The new MM6 Maison Margiela x The North Face capsule was unveiled yesterday, on the third day of London Fashion Week Women's, during the show for the brand's FW20 collection and was one of the most unexpected and interesting of recent months. If many collaborations are limited to simple co-branding, with material updates and little incisiveness on the design level, the capsule seen yesterday on the catwalk was able to fully respect the iconography of The North Face on the one hand and to overturn its construction on the other, creating something new yet familiar. In addition to the actual outerwear, MM6 also featured padded gloves and a Nuptse scarf with a double pocket and a loop fastening system.

The conceptual leitmotiv that inspires the creative output of the anonymous collective behind MM6, in fact, is the circular geometric form. Jackets and fleeces have been hybridized with capes and sleeves have been replaced by adjustable zip systems, changing their silhouette. The result is an outerwerar with a strong avant-garde aesthetic but closer to the armless silhouettes seen on Raf Simons' catwalk than to the grandiose and architectural creations signed by Craig Green or Piccioli for Moncler.

An exact release date is still yet to be announced, but the entire MM6 Maison Margiela x The North Face capsule is expected to arrive in select stores and online starting in September 2020.

MM6, Maison Margiela's diffusion line, announced a few hours ago the upcoming presentation of a collaborative capsule made together with The North Face. This is MM6 Maison Margiela's first collaboration with another brand in nine years, following its partnership with Opening Ceremony in 2011. The capsule will debut in two days,on February 16th, at the show of MM6's FW20 collection during London Fashion Week.

The capsule will focus on outerwear and in particular The North Face's Expedition System line, launched in 1990. In announcing the capsule, Maison Margiela stated:

Resonating with the modular and customizable nature of both the MM6 collection and the original Expedition System, garments are engineered with interlocking components that adapt and extend the protective, insulating properties of each design”.

At the moment only one photograph has been made public, that of a blue and black DRT Jacket that features the double branding of MM6 and The North Face on each black front panel. Other items in the collection should be reinterpretations of the Denali Jacket, the Himalayan Coat, the Mountain Kaban and the classic Nuptse, while among the accessories we will see a new version of the Nuptse scarf and a backpack and a clutch inspired by the Base Camp Duffel. In addition, although MM6 is a women's clothing line, all garments will be unisex.

The new MM6 Maison Margiela x The North Face capsule will be unveiled on February 16th at the brand's show during London Fashion Week. Stay connected to nss magazine for all updates on the capsule drop date.
