The best and worst looks of the Oscars 2020

From Dior dresses and tributes to Kobe Bryant to Timothée Chalamet's tragic outfit

The best and worst looks of the Oscars 2020 From Dior dresses and tributes to Kobe Bryant to Timothée Chalamet's tragic outfit

Last night, at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, the 92nd Academy Awards took place, amid some criticism for the absence of female directors and African-American artists. Among the historic Oscars won by Bong Joon Ho, the revival of Renèe Zellwegger and the first award won by Brad Pitt, the award ceremony was rather dull. And even the red carpet didn't have too many sparks, even if there were some surprises. Coming off the Independent Spirit Awards, it seems that celebrities had exhausted all their creative streak, although there are some lucky exceptions. It must be said that, at least, most of the looks were "green": either processed from sustainable materials, or vintage and recycled.

Among the best female looks of the evening, there is Scarlett Johansson, who in Oscar de la Renta manages to give us a bit of beauty and make us forget that ignoble lamb that she has tattooed on her back. Brie Larson also wins, choosing Celine and Bulgari for her look, while Renée Zellweger, even if a bit stiff in a classic Armani Privé, recalls a diva from yesteryear, as well as Rebel Wilson, who took cue from Lizzo's outfit at the Grammys. In the front row, the two stars of Bombshell are no less: Charlize Theron in Dior Haute Couture and Margot Robbie with an unforgettable vintage of Chanel embellished with a jewel hanging from the neckline. In the face of sustainability, However, Saoirse Ronan chooses a layered Gucci dress decorating her hair from a bee-shaped jewel. Janelle Monae enchants in a sparkly ralph Lauren dress with a hood reminiscent of the iconic Azzedine Alaa made famous by Grace Jones. But the best for fantasy and expression is instead Natalie Portman, who chooses a Dior Haute Couture with gold trim and on the outerwear has the names of all the female directors excluded from the nominations embroidered on it.

Among men there is a definite return to the more traditional forms of tailoring, as confirmed by Antonio Banderas, Joaquin Phoenix and Taika Waititi, who embellish their suits with two noteworthy jewel brooches. Fresh from Oscar, Brad Pitt does not disappoint in a classic tuxedo by David Yurman who for the occasion also sports a flashy gold ring as big as the island in the shape of a heart that Angelina had given him. Applause also for Mahershala Ali in Ermenegildo Zegna, although his class is now a certainty and Rami Malek in an all-black double-breasted suit signed by Saint Laurent.  By his side, Spike Lee shines with a yellow and purple Gucci tuxedo that featured the number "24" on both the lapel and the back, a tribute to Kobe Bryant, and paired it with a pair of 2014 Nike Kobe 9 Elites Sequoia.

But there are a few disappointing ones: no mercy for Billy Porter and Billie Eilish, whose trademark was so original a year ago and so boring at the dawn of the new decade. Anothe letdown is Timothée Chalamet who according to The Cut was supposed to hit the red carpet with a backless outfit that would really be revolutionary and instead dressed as a ghostbuster or gas station attendant in a Prada workjacket completely unsuitable for a gala especially when completed with Danny Zucko-style hair. Eminem returns to the stage to sing "Lose Yourself" in memory of 8 Mile, but looks like an ex-boyfriend who never got past the end of his relationship with 2002. Greta Gerwig, on the other hand, seems to have literally stolen an old courtain to make her dress. Finally, Al Pacino and Robert De Niro, whose suits fitted so bad, enter the competition for the most trash couple of the week.
