The future in the Louis Vuitton 2054 collection

Virgil Abloh takes us forward

The future in the Louis Vuitton 2054 collection Virgil Abloh takes us forward

What will Louis Vuitton look like 200 years after its foundation? This is the question that Virgil Abloh asked himself when he conceived the Louis Vuitton 2054 collection for the brand's FW19 season, which tries to imagine the future of menswear.

In the future imagined by Abloh, luxury menswear becomes technical and multipurpose. The watchword is "accessomorphosis" which, as Abloh explained ahead of the debut of his first collection, represents accessories that can turn into garments, the utilitarian object that becomes an integral part of the look.

When does an accessory morph into a garment? We've all been carrying these cross-body bags. It's a modern way of dressing. From day one, I was like, let's own this space. It's the type of garment that can be distinctly Vuitton.

All items are water-repellent. The collection includes a puffer jacket, a military-style parka, a padded overshirt, two sneakers, military-inspired hiking boots whose upper follows the tubular structure of duvets, various poches, scarves and chain necklaces. The classic cargo pants blend with the parachuting pants and have removable pockets, the holdall can become a sleeping bag, the bucket hat can be folded and "packed" on itself. Synthetic surfaces are iridescent or black, with a glossy patina.
