When The Towel Drops #girlsinmuseums' first exhibition in Milan

After our interview with the girls behind the Instagram account #girlsinmuseums, born with the purpose of shedding light on the women who attend and work for and inside museums, we are pleased to announce #girlsinmuseums’ first official event, which will take place tonight Friday, November 18, at 7.30 pm at Fabbrica del Vapore in Milan.

When The Towel Drops, that’s the project’s name, was created with the aim to investigate the censored representation of femininity and sexuality in Italian cinema. The research was carried out by exploring the national censorship archive hosted by the Cineteca di Bologna, recovered and digitized from 2014 by the artist collective Radha May. The collected material – scenes cut from the film negatives and documents drawn up by the censorship committee describing the reasons why the scenes were cut out – were reorganized and edited in a film, presented last year at the Granoff Center for the Arts in the United States.

In conjunction with the exhibition, there will be a performance in which the censored scenes will be projected as animated gifs, while a group composed of 20 women between artists and curators will read the documents of the censorship committee.

When The Towel Drops opens tonight at Fabbrica del Vapore of via Procaccini 4, Milan.
