A tribute to Memphis Design

Illustrations by Mariano Pascual

A tribute to Memphis Design Illustrations by Mariano Pascual

Illustrator and graphic designer Mariano Pascual realized a series of images in his project "36 days of type" that includes letters, numbers and more, combined with everyday objects or unusual ones.

The colours and shapes are inspired by the Memphis design - also known as Menphis Group or Memphis Milano - which has been a collective of Italian designers and architects founded by Ettore Sottsass and active between 1981 and 1987. The group emerged as one of the greatest exponents of the postmodernist scene of the eighties, through bold projects that they considered as a mix of past and present designs. Its distinctive features were the use of bright colours and geometric shapes, with a skilful recovery of a kitsch style.

In his illustrations Pascual makes a tribute to this type of design, and intrigues us leading us to analyze every element of his strange compositions.
