The photography of Stanley Kubrick

The photography of Stanley Kubrick

Even before his cinema debut, Stanley Kubrick had already experimented with the visual storytelling.

He worked as a photographer for the New York Magazine and Look, and compiled an archive of photographic reports, in which he captured both the harsh everyday reality and the worldliness luxurious life, opposite situations of the human condition.

The full anthology of Stanley Kubrick's pictures "Drama and Shadows" (Phaidon), offers a creative glimpse into Hollywood's early visual identity, and here's a gallery of our favorite shots depicting movie stars, the crowd at the circus and more - to discover a new side of an icon already notoriously subversive.
