What went down at the Emmy Awards 2016

Our top 5 moments

What went down at the Emmy Awards 2016 Our top 5 moments

Game of Thrones and The People vs. O. J. Simpson: American Crime Story triumph over the 68th edition of the Emmy Awards.

Jimmy Kimmel, for the second time on the stage after 2012, leads among carpool karaoke, digs at Maggie Smith, who has been deserting the show for years despite being nominated and having won several times in her career, and derision by Matt Damon who taunted him for losing in the category of best comedy show.

Tatiana Maslany of Orphan Black and Rami Malek are both awarded for the first time with the award for Lead Actors in a Drama Series.

And then? Here are the best moments of the 2016 Emmys.

#1 Jimmy Kimmel's Opening act

Jimmy Kimmel knows it: the road to the Emmys can be steep and windy.

The ceremony’s host has to reach the Microsoft Theater, but the police is chasing after him. To his aid comes a white Ford Bronco, the protagonist of one of the most famous American Crime Story scenes and same car on which O.J. Simpson tries to escape. Dumped in the street, he gets a ride from Modern Family's Dunphy, but an accident stops its run. James Corden comes in Kimmel’s rescue with his Carpool Karaoke. But singing "Wake me up" by the Wham is not enough to reach the destination. Julia Louis-Dreyfus aka Veep's Selina Meyer arrives, but for Kimmel to finally make it to the stage it’s necessary to invoke the aid of holy Oprah Winfrey who sends Daenerys (Emilia Clarke) with Drogon.

Because "if your show doesn't have a dragon or a white Bronco in it, go home now."

#2 Stranger Things goes "Uptown Funk"

They come and totally steal the show.

Who? The three kids from Stranger Things: Millie Bobby Brown (Eleven), Caleb McLaughlin (Lucas), and Gaten Matarazzo (Dustin).

They arrived at the Microsoft Theatre on their bikes and made their way through the stars among the public handing them sandwiches with jam and peanut butter made by Jimmy Kimmel's mother, worried that someone could get hungry during the long ceremony. Kevin Spacey appreciated it, but the best performance the trio of Stranger Things did was off-camera, when they entertained fellow actors dancing and singing "Uptown Funk" by Bruno Mars and Mark Ronson.

#3 Game of Thrones records

38 Emmys.

With the 11 awards won at this edition, including Best Drama Series, Best Director and Best Screenplay, Game of Thrones becomes the most awarded show dramatic ever. Who detained the record before? It was Frasier.

To receive the award on stage at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles it was the entire cast of the series along with showrunners David Benioff and D. B. Weiss who thanked George Martin, the author of the books upon which the series is based, and fans for having changed their lives.

#4 Sarah Paulson is the Best Dressed Woman

Sarah Paulson, Ryan Murphy and American Horror Story’s muse, won an Emmy for her role as a supporting actress in the miniseries The People v O. J. Simpson: American Crime Story, but she also brought home another award.

An authentic diva in her shimmering Prada dress she is the most elegant of the event.

A special mention goes to Priyanka Chopra in a red Jason Wu, Tracee Ellis Ross in Ralph Lauren Collection, Emilia Clarke aka the Mother of Dragons in a nude Atelier Versace and Taraji P. Henson who sported two Vera Wang dresses – a yellow one for the red carpet and a chocolate one for the stage.

#5 "Maggie, if you want this, it will be in the lost and found"

Surprisingly Maggie Smith won the statuette for Best Supporting Actress in a Drama Series for her role as Violet Crawley, Mother Countess of Grantham, in Downton Abbey, winning over the candidates from Game of Thrones Lena Headey, Emilia Clarke and Maisie Williams.

The British actress, who didn’t show up at the event – again – and the host Jimmy Kimmel ironically says: "Downton absent. What is wrong with us? Why do we keep nominating this woman? Lame Maggie Smith, if you want an Emmy, you better hop on a plane right now and get your Dowager Count-ass over hereIf you want this, it will be in the lost and found."
