The MET will dedicate its next exhibition to Rei Kawakubo

The second living designer after YSL

The MET will dedicate its next exhibition to Rei Kawakubo The second living designer after YSL

Will Rei Kawakubo be the star of the upcoming exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art? If the rumor proves to be true, the enigmatic founder of Comme des Garçons would be the second living designer to whom the institute dedicates a retrospective since 1983, when Diana Vreeland set up a tribute to Yves Saint Laurent.

After the great success of Manus X Machina and exhibitions such as China: Through the Looking Glass or Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty, which attracted thousands of spectators, the one dedicated to the Japanese designer could be yet another cult event, the must-see of the next year.

According to WWD, the news would be certain although there was no confirmation by the parties concerned. Meanwhile, the Met manifested its esteem towards the designer and his post-atomic fashion: "Kawakubo’s empire combines an industrially inspired socialist work ethic with a nearly fanatical desire to purvey clothing as an ever-changing product of its sociocultural environment, citing both neorealism and futurism in runway collections and advertising".
